Characters missing with their attacks was in RPGs from the start, landing every attack is (or was) the realm of fighting/hack n slash/action/etc. I don't fully get the hate for the combat system. but Personality attribute is quite worthless in Oblivion).Д®DIT let's not get into how vanilla Oblivion's level scaling leads to a situation where the game is easier for highly-skilled level 1 character than it is for level 25 character. Indeed, once you know how the minigame works, you'll realize there is zero point in taking Speechcraft as a major skill (unless you want something easy to level up. In Oblivion, one plays a minigame, to which the character skill has minimal impact. In Morrowind, one must persuade characters to increase their disposition, and the chance of success depends a lot on the characters Speechcraft, Personality, and to lesser extent, your equipment (people like rich-looking stuff better). Of non-combat skills, Speechcraft is much more important in Morrowind than in the later games. Morrowind's combat is frustrating in early levels but once you hit 50 skill, you start hitting very reliably assuming your fatigue is nearly full. It is really simplified and boring system. Hit chance is always 100%, as long as you actually hit the enemy. On Oblivion/Skyrim, character skill affects how much damage you do, along with strength and the weapon used. In the later games, spells cannot fail, which changes magic a lot. Willpower gives innate resistance to some effects, and increases spell success. Damage is calculated based on how long you held your weapon ready (and the weapon itself), and what's your strength (50=normal damage, 100=50% more damage, 1=50% less damage). In Morrowind, the character skill (along with agility and current fatigue) determines whether or not you hit. Who the hell claims Morrowind and Oblivion/Skyrim have same core gameplay? The basic idea is the same, yes, but the execution is quite different, for in Morrowind, character attributes and skills have a lot more impact on success.

I'm not sure if I should just wait until I have a PC that could play it well enough (with mods) or just go back and try the Xbox version again.

I'm actually playing through Skyrim right now (along with a few other games I want to finish before the Xbox One and PS4 arrive) but I'm interested in giving Morrowind another try. It just has aged better than a game like Morrowind. And it's not like I can't enjoy older games I recently just played through (completely) Planescape: Torment this past Winter, and I absolutely adored it in every way. I have loved every single TES game past it, not to mention the two Fallouts released by Bethesda and Obsidian, which are of a similar style. I really want to try to get into Morrowind. I'm sure it was great in 2002, but it just doesn't work as well today. Now while this difficulty is great, the outdated combat now feels very strange.

You don't feel like you're ever getting a free pass, which makes things a lot more rewarding as you go. It feels like a world that wants to kill you at every turn, which is great. I love the setting and mood of the game it's so exotic and foreboding at times. I think I would have loved this game back in 2002, but it just isn't the same today. I think it has a lot to do with how it has aged.

I usually get farther than the last time I play, but I never have that.that spark that you get ever time you start to play a Bethesda game, or a WRPG in general. I've tried several times on my 360 (the original Xbox version) over the past few years, but for some reason I usually just give up on it for some reason or another after a few hours each time.
